THIS JUST IN: COMIC PROS ARE BORING

Last Sunday the Armageddon Sci-Fi Convention hit Melbourne. Needless to say I was there, as I am not one to miss a chance to hobnob with the Nerd Pantheon. I was hoping to have a very exciting post to gush about how very entertaining and interesting the whole experience was. Alas, I do not have that post.
Here's a piece of advice. If you ever get the chance to attend a panel that features Jimmy Palmiotti, Gail Simone, Amanda Conner and Nicola Scott go visit the dentist instead. Both will probably put you to sleep, but at least the dentist will fix your teeth in the process.
Admittedly, I wasn't expecting much. Palmiotti is a middling writer (and that's when he's working with a partner!), Conner's pencils do not tickle my fancy, and I had never heard of Nicola Scott. Gail Simone I have read and enjoyed, but only on sporadic occasions. My attendance was more due to professional curiosity than genuine enthusiasm.
But heavens to murgatroyd how dull it was! The highlight - Palmiotti hates Mr. Mxzpytlk, and has refused to work on titles when asked to use th character. And, uhhhh... that is it. It was the usual questions really. Boring stuff like "Who's your favourite character" and "Is it tough being a woman in the industry" and "What comics inspired you" and "Blah blah bling blah bler". Dull questions resulting in dull answers. Perhaps I should have asked "What is your all-time favourite punch in comics?" but I don't even think that would have gotten results.
I could be slightly biased though - the only other comic pro panel I've been to featured Warren Ellis and Grant Morrison chugging whiskey, slagging off X-Men crossovers and banging on about Chris Claremont's private jet, alien abduction, and using masturbation-fuelled magic rituals to drive up sales. Now THAT was interesting. A few half-hearted innuendos and shallow insights into the creative process could hardly compare.
Still, I was disappointed. If I'm out of bed before midday, I expect to be entertained. At no point during this panel did I come close.
