Dave Cockrum dies at 63

Dave Cockrum died this morning at the age of 63 from complications arising from diabetes. For those who don't know, Cockrum is a comic book artist, and was the driving visual force behind the relaunch of the X-Men in the 1970s. He helped to create a whole lot of characters that are synonymous with the franchise - Storm, Colossus, Nightcrawler, the Shi'ar, the Starjammers, the Imperial Guard, the Brood. The new X-Men may still have been a success without Dave, but they'd have been a very different kind of success. He may have been overshadowed by John Byrne's legendary run, but Cockrum remains one of my all time favourite pencillers. His two runs on Uncanny X-Men (from #94-107 and #145-164) and the sprawling space opera epics they contained are among the comics I've enjoyed the most. He's also well known for his run on Legion of Super-Heroes, but that's not a title I'm very familiar with. Here's a gallery of some of Dave's best X-Men covers as a meagre and inadequate sort of tribute.
If you're looking for a great showcase of Dave's work, pick up a copy of Essential X-Men Volume 1. It's in black and white, which shows his art is excellent detail, and it helps that the stories a super good as well. I think I might break it out right now and reminisce a little while.
