What's your favourite Comic Cover?
January 22nd 2007 12:04
There have been a lot of great comic covers over the years, and since I'm feeling lazy I thought this would be a great time to share my favourite since it's a post that won't take very long.
The thing is, there's a veritable assload of covers that this could be. I have a lot of favourites. If we're narrowing it down, I suppose I have to go with something from The Uncanny X-Men, as it's been the series that I've stuck with longer than any other. But there are a lot, from lots of different series, and if you ask me tomorrow I might have changed my mind.
Anyway, a definite candidate is issue #251.
Wolverine nailed to a cross is awesome. My general criteria for what makes a great cover is whether it screams "READ ME FANBOY!!!" and this one does the trick. After all, that's the whole purpose of a comic cover, to attract attention and make you look inside. I've seen plenty of stunningly gorgeous covers that just haven't aroused my curiosity in the slightest. Just as I've seen really ugly ones that are utterly compelling.
Still sticking with the theme of Wolverine in peril, we've got issue #234:
Poor old Wolvie's turning into an alien here, which I guess beats what's happening to him on the next cover. Both of those shown so far were by Marc Silvestri. Whoever was colouring Marc's work in those days had a penchant for garish purple and green, but I find that on these covers it works pretty well. They'd stand out on the shelves if nothing else.
But I think there's only one cover I that for me stands out above all others. It's a bit of a cliched choice, it gets trotted out in a lot of people's lists, but the reason for that is that it's exceedingly awesome. I give you the winner, Uncanny X-Men #142:
"THIS ISSUE, EVERYBODY DIES!" I used to see that cover in comic ads in the late 80s, back before I became a rabid X-Men fan. Every single time I would think, "Man, I have got to read that story." I barely even knew the characters at the time, but there's something about that image and those words that pulls me in. Thankfully, when I did finally get to reading the story inside, it was every bit as good as I'd hoped. That John Byrne guy might be a bit of a crackpot these days, but the man does and always has slung a mean pencil.
So, what are your favourite covers? If you can't remember the exact number, give me a general description - I might be able to dredge it up for you!
