AT LAST: MY DREAM COMIC

February 10th 2009 08:03
The New York Comic-con took place over the weekend, and if there's one thing that I've noticed, it's that it's a damn good time for me to relive my comic-book childhood.

First, there's the IDW Transformers line, and specifically those being written by Simon Furman. Furman wrote the best TF stuff back in the day, and he's still pretty good. He's now so synonymous with the characters that it would be hard to picture the franchise without him. Transformers was the second title that I started collecting as a kid, and I loved Furman's stuff back then. I still like it a good bit.

Second, and still on a Hasbro kick, there's Larry Hama back on G.I. Joe. This was the first comic that I ever collected, and I still retain a massive fondness for it. The Devil's Due titles never felt quite right (you know, except for the few times Larry got to write them), because for me, G.I. Joe wasn't a regular licensed property. It was Larry's book. It's kind of like all of those Conan pastiche novels out there - some are great, but none match up to the original work by Robert E. Howard.

And speaking of Conan, there are still Conan comics out there! Sure, they're not by Howard (because he's dead of course), and they're not even by seminal Conan writer Roy Thomas. But, despite a recent downturn in the quality the Conan title is still good. I was buying this book for a while after Transformers got cancelled - until I discovered my greatest love:

Chris Claremont's X-Men.

I came in at the wrong time - just a few months before Claremont quit the title. Sure, I was still hooked on the Jim Lee art, but even as a teenage fanboy I recognised the drop in quality. Many a year I've spent wondering what might have been, and clamoring for Marvel to put Claremont on a title that kicks off from the point where he first left.

So now we come to the recent NY Con, and this announcement.

It's like my every dream come true. Certainly it won't have Jim Lee on art, but Tom Grummett's no slouch either. Alas it won't have the Claremont of 1991 either, but I still like the one we've got. Claremont takes a lot of flak about his return, but I enjoyed his first return on the two core titles, I loved X-Treme X-Men, and I also really enjoyed his second return to Uncanny X-Men. I'm expecting that this will be awesome as well.

And thankfully it's running bi-weekly! So even if it doesn't succeed, it's guaranteed a pretty decent run.

Wow. This is easily the most exciting announcement coming out of the con. Forget your Dark Reigns and your Dark Wolverines and your Ultimate Comics. Claremont's back, baby!
